Chess in Milan and the towns around it
Chess around Milan lives in its clubs: amateur sports associations affiliated to the Italian federation, a group of them inside the city and a ring of others in the towns of the hinterland and the Brianza, from Legnano and Lainate to Cinisello Balsamo, Vimercate and Lissone. Around them sit courses for children, recurring tournaments, a bar listed for a Thursday chess evening and the giant boards of Parco Nord.

Chess960 around Milan
Chess960, also called Fischer Random, starts each game from one of 960 shuffled back-rank setups, so memorised openings count for little. Over the board it is still rare around Milan: the single trace found is a page of Scacchi a Colori Milano headed “Scacchi 960” and dated 17 March 2025, which shows photographs and does not name the hall where the games took place.
Nothing dated 2026 turns up in the Lombardy committee’s calendar, among the Italian events on chess-results or on the clubs’ own pages. The federation has written rules for a first national Chess960 championship with provincial stages run by the regional committees, yet no Lombardy date was found when these pages were read. Between club evenings the variant can be played online at ch960.com.

How this list is kept
The list holds 32 entries, 32 of them active or awaiting a newer sign of play. Their facts come from the Italian federation’s register of affiliated societies, the Lombardy committee’s calendar, tournament result pages, the clubs’ own websites and the local press, each fact dated with the day its page was read.
Entries are ordered by the date of their newest evidence and are never ranked. When no page states a fact, the card says “not stated by sources” instead of guessing. The method page explains the two status lines, the three source marks and what the list leaves out.
